Air traffic control system vulnerable to cyberattack

Why do people still see this as surprising ,”We live in an IP based world. Period.” . Let me tell you that the entire oil and gas industry from exploration till the gas station around the corner , telcos that makes your phone ring, utility companies, hospitals, airports , railways, highways, sea and air and ground traffic control, the Suez and panama canals, even your smart fridge are all using IP at one stage or another…and since IP is vulnerable by design…what are we doing about that ?

There is no point in all the hype around the news that aviation systems world wide are vulnerable to attacks..we all know that. If a system use a mouse and keyboard with a colorful web interface then its vulnerable to some extent….a secure system is a system that is not powered up as they say.

The truth is that we as world nations are not serious about security because nothing catastrophic happened so far, if the systems above are crucial to the way of life then no money should be spared in mitigating obvious vulnerabilities like the IPV4 …IPV6 has been around for years and can surely help fix some of the security related issues…How many countries approved a road-map to adopt IPV6 throughout the infrastructure in…lets say the next 10 years.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control system is
vulnerable to cyberattacks via Web applications that support the system,
according to a new report released by the Transportation Department’s
Office of Inspector General (OIG).
“In our opinion, unless effective action is taken quickly, it is likely
to be a matter of when, not if, [air traffic control] systems encounter
attacks that do serious harm to [air traffic control] operations,” wrote
Rebecca Leng, DOT’s assistant inspector general for financial and
information technology audits, in the report.
Reps. John Mica (R-Fla.) and Tom Petri (R-Wis.) requested the report,
titled “Review of Web Applications Security and Intrusion Detection in
Air Traffic Control Systems.”
The satellite-based air traffic control system is heavily reliant on
commercial software and IP-based technology. Among the auditors’
